Ransom Service

I've been reading Chris Saul's blog through planetsun.org and the very next morning I got touched by business genius myself. One of my VoIP ITSPs has cancelled a DID I had registered with them. Without notice, just like that. The termination e-mail claims I haven't used the number in more than 365 days even though it had been active for only 60 days and it has been registered all the time with sipXecs, my Open Source IP PBX of choice.

The e-mail says I can have the number back by paying 50 CHF within the next ten days. Nevertheless, the account has already been deleted along with voice mail (not that I had any) and all its settings. An FAQ entry on their site explains that it's not up to them, it's the computer that deletes the accounts. Well, if they are not the ones in charge of what their computers do they are probably not the best VoIP provider anyways.

I knew of ransomware but I'd never heard of a ransom service. But this for sure is a good way to get rid of your customers.
